Review

There are more cases to solve, and there?s a lot more entertainment to enjoy as the supposedly-retired crime-fighting team of Dennis Waterman, James Bolam and Alun Armstrong knuckle down to business once more. And as they do so, New Tricks proves that if you want consistent quality, you need to turn to the old pros.

For it?s the outstanding cast, clearly having a ball here, that make New Tricks quite so much fun. This fourth series sees the trio of mismatched detectives--once more working for Amanda Redman--solving crimes and generating many laughs as they do so. Their methods are inevitably more towards the old school, and this inevitably brings them into conflict with the generation that followed them, but this just adds to the fun. Throw in a host of welcome famous faces in cameo roles, and it feels like a piece of television where good storytelling and strong production values sit above gimmicks and whizzbang special effects.

The pace of New Tricks may not immediately endear it to the CSI generation, but for many, that?s part of the appeal. That, and the quality of writing and the chance to enjoy good actors playing the kind of good roles that you?d thought had long since dried up. More of the same please, BBC. --Jon Foster

new tricks rocks
This is a great series to watch: it's funny, smart and engaging.

The acting is great, and plots are original and interesting. Most BBC series, like New Tricks, don't have the Hollywood hype and formulas.

Beware of blasphemy
We found the review that warned of blasphemy very helpful in deciding not to buy "New Tricks" Series 4.

It was a present!
Considered to be the only consistently 'intelligent script' at the moment, this was purchased as a 'requested' present. It lived up to expectations.

New Tricks Series 4
What a disappointment to find excellent acting and storyline completely plundered by Amanda Redman's use of blasphemous language. I had to stop and reject some episodes at that point, an evening's viewing spoiled.

In America they apparently have a "bleeper" which bleeps out bad language but I cant find it in the UK.

A classic TV series!
Still a classic light hearted and entertaining good guys v the bad guys series. Probably one of the best teamings of well known actors for a long time!
